In 1987
Turnberry Zorro “Wahr” (Var) was the 4th of 6 ‘Aussie Imports’ to arrive
at Soltau during the 87/88 period. He arrived with his sister Zantay at
7 weeks of age. Zantay “Taube” was in good spirits, Zorro was not, he was
seriously ill (due to stress).
I would
state that had his sister not accompanied him he would have been dead on
arrival. I do not know if it was due to the flight or the week they spent
with the shipping agents prior to that which contributed to his condition.
Wahr suffered a couple of health set backs through the years, but generally
went from strength to strength.
He was an
extremely glamorous dog making him a popular choice for Group and In Show.
Most of his 30+ CC’s went through to Group and In Show awards.
It was at
the 1992 Tux National where he was placed in the final 7 out of 1900 entries
for In Show that he contracted a strain of Parvo not covered by vaccination.
He was in a critical condition within hours of returning home. His daughter,
Soltau Blazin’ Bright who was feeding 3 day old Ch. Ulverscroft Kanto puppies
(including the later Ch. Soltau Dena) also became ill soon after. It was
a very frightening 5 days. We came so close to loosing them. Both Zorro
and Blazin’ Bright were retired from the show ring from this point. They
both recovered and spent the rest of their days lying in the sun and on
the bed. [Interesting enough, it was only the dogs which had had the most
recent vaccinations ie, 3 months earlier, that came down with the virus,
the dogs that were due for vaccinations did not!]
Wahr died
in my arms at the Vet's on 17/10/1996 as the result of a massive haemorrhage,
he was 9 years of age. We were so very fortunate to have been given the
opportunity to own such an incredible dog. I have based my breeding programme
on Wahr, which is so clearly evident in his grandson Soltau La Vida Loca.
